Mordecai became a star pitcher for the Cubs. In 1907, he helped the Cubs win game after game. That year, in the World Series against the Detroit Tigers, Mordecai pitched a shutout, helping his team win the championship.

Now, on this sunny day in 1908, Mordecai was not the pitcher on the mound. He watched as the chosen starter faced the batters for the New York Giants. Soon, the batters were filling the bases, and the crowd was roaring.

And then, with one run in, two outs, and two men on base for the Giants, Mordecai was summoned to the mound. Staring down the batter, Mordecai gripped the ball with his three fingers and hurled a sharp breaking curve across the plate. Strike one! Strike two! Strike three! The batter was out. The inning was over. And soon, so was the game. The Cubs beat the Giants, 4–2.

The next morning’s newspaper hailed Mordecai as “the mighty three-fingered star.” He would go on to pitch winning game after winning game, retiring from Major League ball after the 1916 season. He coached in the minor leagues and for semipro and college teams until 1920.

In 1949, Mordecai Brown was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, earning him a well-deserved place in baseball history.

Mordecai was once asked by a reporter how he thought that he would pitch if he had the use of all of his fingers. Mordecai replied, “Well, I don’t know. Three is all that I have ever had to work with.” And it was all he ever needed.
